So I have been lifting weights at Groundwork (Karl’s gym) for about 18 months. What is different for me?
For sure I am stronger, I can lift my own body weight now, so my ability to lift has at least doubled, because of this I can do more around the house and I stand straighter. I have lost my ‘lock down’ weight gain with no effort, and the flab associated with that is going.
Groundwork is a little different and that is what attracted me. It is a small gym catering for a specific group. Most gyms think they cater for all comers but really they are focussed on 20-30 year olds, who are almost indestructible. I have belonged to a couple of these bigger gyms and find they either underestimate what I can achieve, leaving me bored, or think I will keep up with the 20 year olds which has resulted injury.
Karl is targeting an older group (I’m 74) , or people recovering from injury ( although all are welcome – there is apparently a harder training group that collects there hours before I do). Despite this focus we are encouraged to perform a little harder than we think we can, but always under supervision. Karl is always there, quick to spot a technique problem or to modify an exercise that isn’t quite right for us at the time. Very reassuring.
We also have a program prepared for us weekly, this ensures we progress at a steady pace, with recovery weeks scheduled in. I have been surprised at times at what I can do with encouragement although there are definitely some off days.
I think some older people feel that if they haven’t been active or gym bunnies while younger it is now too late, some people think we are only capable of lifting tiny weights ( like a can of beans) or that weight work is only for 30 year old men.
We need a few safeguards but not cotton wool, we need to be appropriately challenged and supervised to prevent errors. For the latter I recommend Karl’s introductory classes, even if you have done gym work before. Technique needs to be exact, as for any sport. I think it is the best thing I have done for myself and my future for a long time.
Tomorrow is gym day – can’t wait!
