Groundwork Member – Jen W

I first started lifting weights over 40 years ago to improve strength for playing sports. For the last 20 years I’ve lifted weights regularly to maintain and improve strength and in particular to treat and prevent osteoarthritis and prevent osteoporosis.

When I heard Karl talk about his journey and Groundwork Fitness I was recovering from an injury and been unable to train for a couple of months. Karl’s approach to building strength sounded very interesting. I was a bit hesitant at the start about the big weights we use at Groundwork but Karl’s training, with the focus on very specific and precise technique, makes it surprisingly easy. I was surprised and thrilled in the increase in my strength, which then helps in all my other activities.

To anyone thinking about starting to lift weights I’d say “just do it” – provided you have a good trainer to teach and supervise proper technique! The benefits to wellbeing and health, and prevention/mitigation of heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression and more are very well established.
